Nominated Senator Veronica Maina has showered First Lady Rachel Ruto with praise, describing her as the “steady rock” behind President William Ruto and applauding her commitment to prayer and spiritual leadership.
Speaking during the 2026 National Prayer Breakfast Women’s Convocation at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi on Wednesday, Maina said the First Lady had remained grounded in faith despite holding one of the country’s most influential positions.
“We greatly, deeply admire you as women leaders,” Maina said.
“Thank you for being a mentor. Thank you for being a mother to our nation. Thank you for being the steady rock that makes our President succeed.”
The senator praised Rachel Ruto for dedicating time to prayer and fasting, saying her example should inspire Kenyans to seek spiritual guidance for the country.
“This is a woman of God who takes time to pray and fast,” Maina said.
“If Her Excellency, who lives in the palace, takes time to pray and fast and refuses to eat what is on the king’s table sometimes to seek God, how much more do we need to seek God for our nation?”
Maina also hailed the First Lady’s “Tuombeni Kenya” initiative, saying it played a key role in rallying Kenyans to prayer during moments of national anxiety and uncertainty.
“You remember when Her Excellency began Tuombeni Kenya in the midst of anxiety and crisis in our nation,” she said.
“She traversed the 47 counties just calling upon the men and women of God to kneel humbly before God and pray for the healing of our land.”
According to the senator, the initiative helped strengthen unity and faith at a time when many Kenyans were grappling with economic and social hardships.
“God has pushed Kenya to the next level,” she added.
Maina further urged Kenyans to embrace prayer, humility and forgiveness, saying leadership should be rooted in faith and service to the people.
The Women’s Convocation brought together women leaders, clergy and invited guests ahead of the National Prayer Breakfast set for Thursday at Safari Park Hotel.
This year’s prayer breakfast is themed on forgiveness and reconciliation, with leaders expected to reflect on national unity and peaceful coexistence ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Organisers say the annual gathering seeks to unite leaders from different sectors for prayer and reflection on the state of the nation.
In recent years, Rachel Ruto has championed several faith-based and community empowerment initiatives, including the “Mama Kitchen Garden” programme focused on promoting family welfare, environmental conservation and household empowerment.
