Residents of Machakos county are set to benefit from the ongoing upgrading of the Kangundo–Kivaani section of the B63 (Kangundo–Mwala) Road to bitumen standards, a major infrastructure project being implemented by the Kenya National Highways Authority.

The project covers about 13km from Kangundo to Kivaani and is expected to improve transport and connectivity within the region once completed.

According to project details released by authorities, the road upgrade is being undertaken at an estimated cost of Sh775 million.

The construction works were officially launched in November last year by President William Ruto, with works currently underway.

The road forms part of the B63 route linking Kangundo and Mwala areas in Machakos county.

Residents and motorists using the route have for years experienced challenges caused by the murram surface, especially during rainy seasons when sections of the road become difficult to pass.

The ongoing works are expected to address the transport difficulties and improve movement for both public and private vehicles.

The upgraded road is also expected to reduce travel time between Kangundo, Kivaani, Mwala and neighbouring areas, while lowering vehicle maintenance costs for motorists who regularly use the route.

Traders and farmers are also expected to benefit from easier transportation of agricultural produce and goods to markets within Machakos county and nearby towns.

The road project is part of ongoing infrastructure development programmes aimed at improving road networks and enhancing accessibility in different parts of the country.

Officials indicated that the improved road would strengthen regional connectivity and support economic activities within the area.

Once completed, the road is expected to improve access to schools, health facilities, markets and other essential services for residents living along the Kangundo–Kivaani corridor.

The project is also anticipated to support local businesses and ease transportation for commuters travelling between Kangundo and Mwala.

Construction works on the road are continuing as contractors move ahead with upgrading the section to bitumen standards under the supervision of the highway's authority.
