The wife of former Matungu MP David Were has emotionally questioned why her family continues to lose children under unclear circumstances following the death of her second son in four months.

The grieving mother said she now lives in constant fear as she struggles to understand why her sons have been targeted and killed.

She said the deaths had left the family devastated, especially the widows of her sons, who are struggling to come to terms with the tragedies.

“Why are they killing my children? What have we done? Can we be told to repay them instead so that they can be at peace? Right now, as I walk, I’m scared because I don’t know who is behind my children and me. We don’t know why our children have died. Our two sons have died. One was 41 years, one month and twenty-seven days, the other one is 39 years and five months. Just like that, they are gone with no reason we can explain,” she said.

She expressed frustration over the lack of answers from authorities despite police officers visiting the scene of the latest attack.

“We are just woken up in the middle of the night to learn that they have been killed. Their wives are crying, they can’t find reasons why their husbands have died,” she said.

“I went to the police station, and they visited the scene of the crime. No one is giving us answers on what exactly happened. He was just in the house when he left. The next thing we hear is that he has been killed. Honestly, who have we wronged?”

This comes after the killing of Hannington Were, 39, who was attacked by suspected criminals near Wayside Junction along Nyerere Road in Kisumu in the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to reports made at Obunga police station, Hannington had been walking with a friend towards Mamba Hotel to buy food when they were ambushed near Makini School.

David Were said the attackers, believed to be boda boda riders, stabbed his son twice in the back before hitting him on the head with a metal rod.

Hannington, who worked as a compliance officer at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), was rushed alongside his injured friend to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH). However, doctors confirmed he was dead on arrival.

The former Matungu MP described his son as a private and peaceful person who was not known to have disagreements either at work or within the community.

“His wife was already asleep. She did not know that Hannington had left. Hannington is a very private person and does not always walk at night. I do not know what prompted him to leave,” he said.

His friend remains admitted at JOOTRH with serious injuries as police continue with investigations into the attack.

The latest killing has deepened pain and fear within the Were family, with the former legislator’s wife now vowing to do everything possible to protect her remaining children.
