President William Ruto on Monday commissioned the Sh3 billion 400/220kV Mariakani Substation in Kaloleni constituency, Kilifi county, a key energy project expected to enhance the stability and reliability of electricity supply across Kilifi and the wider coastal region.

The facility transmits more than 1,000MW of clean hydro, geothermal and wind-generated power, strengthening the coastal electricity grid while reducing technical losses and lowering power costs.

The improved power infrastructure is expected to bolster major commercial centres along the coast, including the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone in Mombasa, and drive growth in the manufacturing and tourism sectors.

The commissioning also marked the launch of the Last Mile Connectivity Project, which will connect more than 24,000 households to electricity in the region.

"We remain committed to ensuring adequate and reliable power supply across the country as a foundation for accelerated growth, industrial transformation and improved livelihoods," Ruto said.

The event formed part of the President's five-day development tour of the Coast region, which began on May 21 and covers all six coastal counties, with a focus on infrastructure, energy, housing and land reforms.

The President used the opportunity to engage with the residents of Mariakani.
