Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has appointed Nyandarua Senator John Methu as the new secretary general designate of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
The DCP leader announced the appointment on Monday during a press conference at the party headquarters in Nairobi. The Nyandarua Senator will replace Hezron Obaga in the role.
Gachagua said Methu would immediately begin serving as the party’s spokesperson and secretary general designate pending formal registration by the Registrar of Political Parties.
“Senator John Methu, for all practical purposes, is a member of DCP, and he will start acting from today as the secretary general designate and be the spokesman of the DCP party on all matters starting today,” Gachagua said.
“In due course, in the fullness of time, his name will be forwarded to the Registrar of Political Parties so that he is registered as a duly appointed Secretary General of DCP.”
Gachagua also revealed that the party’s National Executive Council had assigned Methu his first major responsibility, leading DCP’s campaign efforts in the upcoming Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election scheduled for July 16.
“The National Executive Council has given Senator John Methu, the secretary general designate, his first assignment: that he, together with other leaders, take charge of the by-elections in Ol Kalou and deliver a decisive victory to the DCP party,” he said.
The former Deputy President said the party was satisfied with the growth and progress it had made since its formation, noting that thousands of aspirants had already expressed interest in contesting various seats under the DCP ticket in the next general election.
He assured aspirants that the party would conduct free and fair nominations.
“We want to assure our aspirants who have indicated interest that the party will hold free and fair nominations,” Gachagua said.
During the announcement, the party also unveiled several other appointments within its leadership structure.
Lawyer Edgar Busiega from Kakamega County was named Secretary for Information and Technology, while Leonard Cheruyoit from Narok County was appointed Secretary for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.
Abdi Noor Mohamed from Wajir County was appointed
Chairperson of the County Coordinating Committee, while Wilson Kanyago Ndung’u
from Nairobi was named Chairperson of the Students’ Caucus.
This is even as the race for the Ol Kalou parliamentary seat is gathering momentum after former MCA Sammy Ngotho clinched the DCP ticket ahead of the July 16, 2026, by-election.
Ngotho emerged victorious in the party primaries after garnering 12,957 votes, comfortably defeating his closest challenger, Paul Waiganjo, who secured 4,978 votes.
Ngotho, who previously contested the seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket during the 2022 General Election, finished second to the late Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho.
