Traders at the new Nanyuki market are counting losses after a Saturday night fire razed their stalls.
A massive fire has razed the Nanyuki New Market in Laikipia County, destroying property and causing panic among traders and residents.
The inferno, whose cause had not been established, broke out at the busy market, sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky as traders scrambled to salvage their goods.
Emergency response teams from the Laikipia County Government and other agencies were deployed to contain the blaze.
The fire spread rapidly through the market stalls, fuelled by highly flammable structures within the market.
Several businesses are feared to have suffered heavy losses, although the extent of the damage is yet to be determined.
Police officers and county officials also arrived at the scene to help control crowds and coordinate emergency operations.
Authorities are expected to launch investigations into the cause of the fire once the situation is fully contained.
