Police officers have arrested two suspects and recovered cannabis sativa, illicit alcohol and other contraband in separate anti-narcotics operations conducted in Migori and Murang’a counties.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the operations were part of an ongoing crackdown targeting drug trafficking and the illegal alcohol trade in different parts of the country.

In Migori county, officers from Migori County Police Headquarters arrested a suspect during a mobile patrol operation in Migori Township after raiding the Pandi area.

During the operation, police recovered a significant quantity of suspected cannabis sativa, commonly known as bhang, alongside other illegal items.

“Officers recovered suspected narcotic substances believed to be cannabis sativa, including 358 rolls, 30 grams of unprocessed cannabis, seven packets of uncustomed Super Match cigarettes and 1.5 litres of chang’aa,” the police said in a statement.

The suspect was immediately taken into custody as detectives launched further investigations into the source and distribution network of the drugs.

In a separate incident in Murang’a County, police officers from Maragua Police Station arrested a female suspect during a foot patrol operation in the Mbombo area.

The woman was allegedly found trafficking narcotic drugs concealed in a black polythene bag.

“Officers recovered 118 rolls of bhang wrapped in a black polythene bag and cash amounting to Sh1,235, suspected to be proceeds from the illegal trade,” the statement added.

Police said both suspects remain in custody pending arraignment in court, while the recovered exhibits have been preserved as investigations continue.

The National Police Service commended officers involved in the operations, saying the arrests demonstrate the agency’s commitment to combating narcotics trafficking and illicit brews that continue to affect communities across the country.

“The National Police Service commends the officers involved in the operations for their vigilance and continued efforts in combating narcotics trafficking and illicit brews,” the statement said.

Authorities have also appealed to members of the public to support the fight against drugs and criminal activities by volunteering information to security agencies.

Police urged wananchi to report suspicious activities through the nearest police station, emergency numbers 999 and 911, or through the #FichuaKwaDCI toll-free line and WhatsApp platforms.

The arrests come barely a month after the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), working jointly with the National Police Service, uprooted two sacks of bhang in a targeted operation in the Talau area, Trans Nzoia County, and arrested a 22-year-old suspect.

The intelligence-led raid, conducted at a residential compound, is part of an ongoing nationwide crackdown on illicit drugs aimed at dismantling trafficking networks and protecting vulnerable groups.
