President William Ruto on Saturday launched key development projects in Lunga Lunga, Kwale County, including the construction of a modern market and the rollout of rural electrification programmes aimed at boosting trade and improving livelihoods.

During his tour of the region, the President laid the foundation stone for the multi-million-shilling Lunga Lunga modern market.

“Laid the foundation stone for the Sh139 million Lunga Lunga modern market, one of six such markets under construction across Kwale County aimed at providing our traders with a conducive environment to grow their businesses and livelihoods,” he wrote.

In addition to the market project, the President also flagged off the Last Mile Connectivity Programme in Ngathini village, which will see 3,980 households connected to electricity at a cost of Sh362 million.

According to the President, the government is investing a total of Sh1.8 billion in Kwale County under the electrification programme.

“Overall, we are investing Sh1.8 billion to light up more than 15,000 households in Kwale County, which will spur enterprise and create opportunities for our people,” he posted.

He said the expansion of power infrastructure is a key pillar of the government’s development agenda aimed at unlocking economic potential in underserved regions.

Additionally, Ruto announced the rollout of major education infrastructure and youth empowerment initiatives in Kwale County aimed at improving learning conditions and expanding access to technical training opportunities.

He said the government is constructing 3,600 hostel units across universities, TVET institutions and KMTC colleges in Kwale County to provide students with a dignified and conducive learning environment.

“Laid the foundation stone for the construction of hostels at Lunga Lunga Technical and Vocational College in Lunga Lunga Constituency, a Sh260 million project that will enhance accommodation capacity in the institution,” he stated.

“We will also sponsor more than 250 students from the area to undertake short courses at the college at a cost of Sh5 million, as part of our commitment to empowering the youth with practical skills.”

The Lunga Lunga projects add to a series of development initiatives the President is inspecting during his coastal tour alongside other leaders.
