President William Ruto has announced that the government will acquire a new ferry for the busy Likoni crossing in Mombasa as part of efforts to decongest and improve transport services in the coastal city.
Speaking during his development tour of the Coast region, Ruto said the government had committed Sh3 billion towards the project, with the new ferry expected to begin operations before December this year.
“I would like to tell the people of Mombasa and the whole world that we are building another ferry,” the President said while addressing residents at the Likoni channel.
“Before December, we have committed Sh3 billion. By December, we will have a new ferry to reduce the congestion here at this ferry,” he added.
The Head of State also announced an additional investment of Sh500 million aimed at improving mobility and transport infrastructure within Mombasa County.
The Likoni Ferry is one of the most important transport links in Kenya, connecting Mombasa Island to the South Coast.
Thousands of pedestrians, private motorists, public service vehicles and traders rely on the crossing every day for movement and business activities.
For years, residents and travellers have raised concerns over traffic congestion, long waiting hours and overcrowding at the crossing, particularly during rush hours and holiday periods.
The situation has often disrupted transport and business operations, affecting both residents and tourists visiting the coastal region.
The planned ferry is expected to ease pressure at the channel and improve the movement of people and goods between the island and mainland areas.
Ruto’s announcement came as he began a four-day development tour of the Coast region, where he is expected to inspect and launch several projects related to infrastructure, housing, electricity and economic development.
The President said the government remains committed to
investing in projects that improve public transport, create jobs and support
economic growth across the country.
