Acting on a tip‑off from a member of the public, officers from Gakawa police station raided a shop at Ichuga trading centre, where they recovered 92 rolls of cannabis sativa concealed inside a chocolate packet under the counter.
The shop owner and another person found at the premises were immediately arrested.
Following interrogation, the shop owner led officers to his rented residential house. There, police discovered another suspect in the act of preparing cannabis rolls. A further search yielded 692 rolls of cannabis sativa, bringing the total recovered to 784 rolls.
In addition to the packaged rolls, police seized 21kg of unprocessed cannabis sativa, five mobile phones suspected to have been used in conducting sale transactions, and assorted rolling apparatus believed to have been used in the preparation and packaging of the narcotic substance.
The suspects remain in custody pending arraignment in court. The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the crackdown, stating: “The National Police Service reaffirms its commitment to sustaining the crackdown on the distribution of narcotic drugs within the sub‑county and beyond.”
This operation underscores the growing vigilance of law enforcement in Nyeri county, where community tip‑offs have played a crucial role in exposing drug networks.
The raid at Ichuga trading centre highlights how narcotics are often concealed in everyday items to evade detection.
The arrests and seizures mark one of the largest recent hauls in the region, reinforcing the police’s resolve to dismantle drug distribution networks.
The recovered mobile phones are expected to provide investigators with leads into the extent of the trade and possible connections beyond Kieni East.
By combining intelligence from the public with swift police action, authorities continue to target the supply chain of narcotics.
The suspects will face charges under Kenya’s laws on possession and trafficking of prohibited substances, as the police intensify their campaign against drugs in Nyeri county.
