KPC Foundation, Vivo Energy Kenya launch clean cooking initiative for vulnerable households in Mombasa

Phase 1 targets 90 households in Jomvu Kuu.

KPC Foundation, the charitable trust established to implement the Kenya Pipeline Company’s corporate social investment initiatives, launched a clean cooking initiative targeting vulnerable households in Jomvu Kuu, Mombasa County.

The programme forms part of the Foundation's broader Environmental Conservation Programmes, which focus on promoting clean energy adoption, biodiversity conservation, and climate change response.

Phase 1 of the initiative is being implemented in partnership with Vivo Energy Kenya, the company that distributes and markets Shell-branded fuels and lubricants in Kenya.

The initiative directly addresses the harmful reliance on traditional cooking fuels such as firewood and charcoal, which are leading contributors to indoor air pollution, deforestation, and environmental degradation.

Under Phase 1, 90 households in Jomvu Kuu will each receive a 6kg LPG kit comprising a gas cylinder, burner, grill, and an initial gas fill to support the transition to cleaner, safer, and more environmentally sustainable cooking solutions.

Speaking at the launch, KPC Foundation Manager Ms. Rachel Gathoni said: "At KPC Foundation, we are committed to driving sustainable community impact through initiatives that improve livelihoods while advancing environmental conservation. This clean cooking initiative reflects our dedication to supporting vulnerable households in accessing safer and healthier energy solutions, while contributing to the national Climate Action Agenda."

For over 60 years, Afrigas has been at the forefront of introducing LPG cooking gas across the country, pioneering a cleaner alternative to traditional coal and wood fuels that many households once depended on.

Today, that legacy continues with a strong commitment to making clean energy not just accessible, but the standard in homes and businesses across the country.

The initiative builds on KPC Foundation's growing environmental footprint in coastal Kenya. The Foundation has planted over 1,000,000 mangrove tree seedlings and empowered youth and women through programmes, including beekeeping and crab farming, all in support of its long-term commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable community development.
