Mount Kenya University is making significant strides in positioning itself at the forefront of educational innovation, with Vice Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi leading a high-level delegation to China this week to spearhead the full integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the university’s learning systems.
Prof. Jaganyi is currently in Hangzhou City attending a prestigious international conference on “AI + Education: Transformation, Development, Governance.”
The conference, hosted by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province, has brought together global education leaders to explore how AI is reshaping knowledge production, teaching methodologies, and assessment mechanisms.
The conference was officially opened by the Chinese Vice President, Han Zheng, and attended by senior government leaders, including two Vice Ministers of Education, as well as the Vice Presidents of Zhejiang Province and Guangdong Province, underscoring the strategic importance China places on the integration of artificial intelligence in education.

During the conference, Prof Jaganyi was joined by key Chinese partners, including Zeng Botao, President of Nanjing Zhongxing Xinyanda Information Technology Co., and Du Qingbo, Vice Chancellor of Nanjing Vocational College of Information Technology. Following the conference, the MKU Vice Chancellor signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the two institutions in the presence of over 4,000 delegates.
The MoU was signed in the presence of the two Vice Ministers of Education and Vice President of Zhejiang province and Guangdong province, marking a significant milestone in strengthening international collaboration in digital education and artificial intelligence.
Prof. Jaganyi is also scheduled to visit several other Chinese institutes and universities, where he will sign additional high-level MoUs covering various thematic areas, further deepening MKU’s academic and technological partnerships with Chinese institutions.
The conference’s core discussions highlighted that AI is injecting new momentum into economic and social development while fundamentally transforming the underlying logic of education.
International bodies such as UNESCO have also released frameworks for AI ethics, teacher competencies, and student skills, urging nations and institutions to adopt responsible AI applications.
Since 2023, China’s Ministry of Education has successfully hosted the World Digital Education Conference for three consecutive years, achieving tangible outcomes including the establishment of the World Digital Education Alliance and the Smart Education of China platform.

This year’s event aims to build global consensus on leveraging intelligent technologies to enhance educational equity, quality, and governance.
Prof. Jaganyi's participation in the conference reaffirms MKU’s commitment to embracing global standards in digital education.
The university is keen on adopting AI-driven teaching scenarios, innovative learning methods, and secure assessment mechanisms, while also addressing critical issues such as data security, digital literacy, and ethical AI use.
MKU’s industry–academia partnership with Xinyada Information ICT Company, established in 2024, has continued to expand.
The collaboration has since attracted several higher education institutions that are expected to sign additional MoUs with MKU during the course of the week.
The outcomes of the MoU signing and Prof. Jaganyi’s visits to Chinese institutions are expected to pave the way for the integration of cutting-edge AI applications into MKU’s curriculum, ultimately benefiting learners and positioning the university as a regional leader in digital education transformation
