Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the nursing profession as a central pillar in the achievement of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Kenya.
Speaking during celebrations marking International Nurses Week 2026 at The Nairobi Hospital, the PS praised nurses for their dedication, sacrifice, and critical contribution to the delivery of quality healthcare services across the country.
“The Government of Kenya recognises and greatly values the critical role nurses play in the delivery of Universal Health Coverage. Nurses are the backbone of our health system, providing frontline healthcare and strengthening communities across the country,” said Muthoni.
She noted that nurses remain the most important link in the healthcare delivery system, particularly at the primary care level, where they handle the majority of patients seeking basic and essential services.
According to the PS, nurses manage approximately 75 per cent of Level 2 and Level 3 health facilities in Kenya, making them central to the delivery of essential services such as maternal health, immunization, preventive care, and general treatment services.
“The Government is focused on policies and investments aimed at improving training, working conditions, career progression, leadership development, and nurses’ retention,” she added.
The celebrations were organised by the National Nurses Association of Kenya – The Nairobi Hospital Chapter, bringing together healthcare professionals, nursing leaders, and partners under the theme: “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”
The event highlighted the growing recognition of nurses as key drivers of health system resilience, especially in the wake of increasing demand for quality and accessible healthcare services.
The Nairobi Hospital Chief Executive Officer Felix Osano commended nurses for their professionalism and commitment to patient care, noting that they remain a cornerstone of the institution’s healthcare delivery system.
“Our nurses embody the very essence of who we are as an institution. Their dedication, commitment, and selfless service continue to ensure safe, high-quality patient experiences,” said Osano.
He reiterated the hospital’s commitment to supporting the Nursing Division through continuous training, improved working conditions, and professional development programmes aimed at enhancing service delivery.
“I commend the National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK) – TNH Branch and the hospital’s Nursing Division leadership for organising the celebrations and advancing excellence in nursing care,” he added.
During the event, Director of Nursing Services at The Nairobi Hospital, Dr Margaret Muiyuro, underscored the importance of investing in nursing leadership and continuous professional development to improve healthcare outcomes.
“Nursing is a calling grounded in compassion, professionalism, and a commitment to patient-centered care. Investing in nurses directly improves patient outcomes and strengthens healthcare systems,” she said.
Dr Muiyuro further emphasised the need for evidence-based practice and specialization to enable nurses to effectively respond to evolving healthcare challenges, including rising non-communicable diseases and changing patient needs.
The celebrations also recognised outstanding nurses for
exemplary service and excellence in patient care, reflecting the institution’s
commitment to maintaining high professional standards.
International Nurses Week 2026, observed from May 6 to May 12, celebrates the contribution of nurses globally. This year’s theme focuses on empowerment and recognition of the profession, with messages such as “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives” and “The Power of Nurses,” highlighting their indispensable role in strengthening healthcare systems worldwide.
