Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has expressed confidence that President William Ruto will secure a massive victory in the 2027 general election, saying the Kenya Kwanza administration is targeting about 70 per cent of the national vote.
Speaking during an interview on Hot 96 FM on Monday, Mudavadi said the government is keen on delivering a decisive electoral outcome that would minimise post-election disputes and allow the country to move forward without prolonged political tension.
“I would say that we would be looking at 70 per cent of the vote,” Mudavadi said during the interview.
He argued that such a margin would provide political stability and strengthen public confidence in the democratic process.
“A reasonable benchmark would perhaps be the threshold of a constitutional referendum, which was 67 per cent, and when you round it up it is 70 per cent,” he said.
Mudavadi said Kenya has experienced repeated cycles of
contested presidential elections, often resulting in petitions at the Supreme
Court and heightened political tensions.
“When we come to the next elections, we need to get a free, fair democratic process so that we move on,” he said.
“We get a victory where the nation can move on and avoid the tension that comes with contestation. It is part of democracy, but if we can do it better and make it decisive, it would be good for the country.”
The prime cabinet secretary’s remarks come amid increased political mobilisation by leaders allied to Ruto as preparations for the 2027 race begin to take shape.
On Sunday, Mudavadi had made similar remarks while speaking during prayers and a fundraiser in aid of St Peter’s Cathedral in Kapsabet, Nandi county.
During the event, he said he hoped Ruto would secure such a commanding victory that no candidate would feel compelled to challenge the outcome at the Supreme Court.
“We must break the cycle of petitions, and just like the athletes in this region are breaking world records, we also want to work together to ensure President Ruto breaks the record that we shall not have a presidential petition,” Mudavadi said.
He called on residents of the Rift Valley region to register
as voters in large numbers and rally behind the President in the next election.
Mudavadi’s comments also echo sentiments previously expressed by President Ruto himself regarding the next election.
In January this year, Ruto declared that he was targeting a
landslide victory of between two and three million votes in 2027 in order to
avoid the narrow margins that characterised the 2022 presidential race.
Speaking during a United Democratic Alliance National Governing Council meeting at State House, Nairobi, the President said lessons from previous political contestations had informed the formation of the current broad-based government arrangement.
“The last election we won by a margin of 200,000 votes, but this coming election, we must win by a margin of two to three million so that we unite Kenya and move together,” Ruto said.
