Over 70 families displaced by floods in Tana River

More than 70 families have been displaced following flooding in Bukuyu village, Tana River county.

According to the Kenya Red Cross Agency, the families are currently sheltering at Water Grounds camp near the Garissa IEBC offices.

The displaced households are said to have moved into the camp after their homes were affected by rising floodwaters caused by continuous rainfall in the region.

"The number is expected to rise as River Tana continues to swell, forcing more families to flee their homes," Kenya Red Cross said.

This indicates that additional residents from surrounding areas may also be forced to relocate as water levels in the river increase, leading to further displacements

Basic arrangements have been made to accommodate the displaced persons, Kenya Red Cross said.

The agency said more arrivals are anticipated as the flooding persists.

“Support is urgently needed to provide shelter, food and other essential items," it said.

The displaced families are reported to be in need of immediate humanitarian assistance, including adequate shelter materials, food supplies and other essential items required for daily survival.

Humanitarian response teams are expected to continue assessing the situation as the number of displaced families increases.
