Police in Laare, Meru county have arrested three suspects and recovered a loaded firearm in a coordinated intelligence-led operation targeting criminal activities in the area.

The Friday raid, conducted jointly by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Laare and Laare police station, is believed to have disrupted a string of robberies that had unsettled residents in Igembe.

According to detectives, the suspects were apprehended during a planned raid following intelligence reports linking them to organised crime.

During the search of a residence, officers recovered a Beretta 1934 Corto pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition. The firearm had been carefully concealed inside the house, pointing to an attempt to evade detection.

The DCI confirmed that the suspects are in custody and assisting investigators with ongoing inquiries.

Authorities are working to establish the full extent of their involvement in recent robberies and whether they are connected to other criminal networks operating in the region.

“The success of this operation reflects continued efforts to protect lives and property and all individuals involved in crime will be pursued and brought to justice.” The agency said the arrests are part of a wider crackdown on criminal gangs in Meru county.

The recovery of the firearm is considered a significant breakthrough in dismantling criminal operations in Laare.

The Beretta 1934 Corto, a compact semi-automatic pistol historically used in military and police service, poses a serious threat when found in civilian hands.

The DCI further urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement and remain vigilant.

“Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the #FichuaKwaDCI initiative by calling 0800 722 203 (toll-free) or sending a WhatsApp message to 0709 570 000,” the statement said.

The arrests come amid heightened security operations across Meru county, where police have intensified patrols and intelligence gathering to restore calm.

As investigations continue, detectives are expected to present the suspects in court once preliminary inquiries are complete.
