Detectives in Mombasa have arrested three suspects and recovered an AK-47 rifle that was snatched from a police officer during a violent robbery in Maganda area on March 14, 2026.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the recovery, saying officers from Jomvu and Mikindani Police Station mounted a raid in Bangladesh area following a tip-off.

"Acting on a tip-off, the officers launched a precision raid in Bangladesh, focusing on the prime suspect," the DCI said in a statement.

During interrogation, the suspect led officers to another hideout in Narcol area. There, police found two more suspects, one of whom was hiding in the ceiling. All were swiftly apprehended.

A thorough search of the premises uncovered the stolen AK-47 rifle, serial number 5426917, concealed in a sack in the ceiling.

Alongside the weapon, officers recovered thirty rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. Records confirmed the firearm was the same rifle that was violently taken from a police officer during the robbery.

The suspects were escorted to Mikindani Police Station for processing and are expected to face charges related to robbery with violence and illegal possession of firearms.

The DCI noted that the arrests were part of a wider operation targeting a criminal gang believed to have orchestrated the robbery.

"Officers are hot on the trail of additional suspects believed to be part of this crew, who are believed to have participated in the robbery," the DCI said.

The recovery marks a significant breakthrough in the investigation, which began immediately after the March 14 attack. Police say the operation was carefully coordinated to ensure the suspects were cornered before they could flee or dispose of the weapon.

The AK-47 rifle, a standard-issue police firearm, had been a critical piece of evidence in the case. Its recovery is expected to strengthen the prosecution’s case against the suspects once they are arraigned in court.

Authorities have urged the public to continue sharing information that can help dismantle criminal networks.

The DCI has encouraged anonymous reporting through its toll-free line 0800 722 203 or via WhatsApp at 0709 570 000.

The three suspects remain in custody as detectives pursue others believed to have played a role in the robbery. Investigations are ongoing.
