The Committee overseeing the implementation of the ten-point agenda and the NADCO report (COIN-10) described the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as a significant loss, both for the committee and for the nation.
The Committee noted Odinga’s contributions as a long-serving political leader and observed a moment of silence in his honour during a press briefing at a local hotel in Athi River, Machakos County, on Wednesday.
"A lot has happened since the Committee last met with you, key among which is the passing of one of our principals, Raila Amolo Odinga," the Committee said during the briefing, which was read by COIN-10 chairperson Dr Agnes Zani. She was accompanied by other committee members.
Zani said the Committee had held a three-day retreat, supported by the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD-K), to review progress on its mandate since its inception in August and to update the public on developments.
The retreat also included work with a technical team to refine the framework for tracking implementation of the ten-point agenda.
She noted that the Committee’s mandate has a predetermined timeframe, which will conclude in a few months before its final report is submitted to the principals for further consideration and approval.
"As the country comes to terms with this loss, we in the COIN-10 Committee stand in solidarity with Mama Ida Odinga and the wider Jaramogi Oginga Odinga family, who are mourning the passing of Beryl Odinga, Raila Odinga’s younger sister," Zani said.
The Committee also welcomed the new Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Oburu Odinga.
"We congratulate you for taking on the responsibility to carry forward the vision of Baba Raila Amolo Odinga," Zani said.
She added that the Committee had met with Oburu Odinga to update him on the status of its work and was encouraged by his commitment to the ten-point agenda.
During the retreat, the Committee reviewed the ten-point agenda to enhance its tracking framework and agreed on deliverables in line with the agreement signed between President William Ruto (United Democratic Alliance party leader) and the late Raila Odinga in March.
The initiative responds to public concerns over issues that citizens have requested the government address.
Zani said the Committee has held multiple engagements under its terms of reference and mandate.
"We appreciate the commitment of party leaders and political stakeholders on both sides to the ten-point agenda, through engagement with various socio-economic and political actors aimed at improving the nation," she said.
She added that the Committee benefited from input from experts in democracy, governance, strategic communications, and other thematic areas relevant to its work.
Zani said the Committee will continue collaborating with stakeholders and engaging the public through consultations on the ten-point agenda.
She also acknowledged the media’s interest and said the Committee will provide periodic updates on its progress through public engagements and media briefings.
