The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) has suspended all medical services in Siaya County following what it describes as the alleged assault of a young doctor.
According to a letter from KMPDU Nyanza Branch Secretary Dr. Aggrey Orwenyo Nyabuti dated December 2, 2025, the incident is said to have occurred on the night of November 30, when the doctor was reportedly attacked while providing emergency medical services to a patient.
The union alleges that the attack involved “county government leadership, a chief, and staff from the governor’s office.” The claims have not been independently verified.
“This barbaric act is not only morally reprehensible but also a direct violation of international labor standards,” Dr. Nyabuti stated in the letter.
The union cited the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 155 on Occupational Safety and Health, which obligates employers and governments to ensure workplaces are safe and free from violence, intimidation, and hazards.
KMPDU has demanded that the Siaya County Government, under the leadership of Governor James Orengo, take action to guarantee workplace safety and publicly commit to protecting healthcare workers from intimidation and assault.
The union emphasized that doctors must be allowed to exercise their professional judgment without interference, harassment, or threats to their safety.
“The health sector cannot function under fear and coercion,” the letter read.
KMPDU stated that medical services in Siaya will remain suspended until the county government addresses the matter and demonstrates accountability.
The letter was copied to the governor and key county officials, including the County Secretary, Chief Officer for Health, CEC Member for Health Services, Director of Human Resources, the County Director of Health, and the National Secretary General of KMPDU.
Dr. Nyabuti further stated that KMPDU “stands firm” and “will not accept workplace violence to rear its ugly head in Kenya.”
“Until the County Government demonstrates action, our members will not resume duty,” he added.
The suspension of services is expected to affect hospitals and health facilities across Siaya County, potentially delaying emergency and routine medical care for residents.
Efforts to reach the Siaya County Government for comment were still ongoing at the time of publication.
