Tragedy struck a group of tourists when one of them drowned as she ventured into the Indian Ocean for a swimming expedition in Diani, Kwale County.
Police said the Polish national, Borucka Grazyna Janina, was with fellow Polish tourists when she drowned on Friday evening.
They had ventured out at a local resort beach of the ocean for swimming sessions when a huge wave hit her, witnesses said. She had arrived in Kenya on November 13, 2026 and was to check out on November 27.
Witnesses and police said she was overwhelmed by the waves and drowned. Her body was recovered from the water and taken to a local mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Police said they are investigating the incident.
Officials said the beach managers are taking measures to address such incidents.
This is because the region is experiencing a surge in local and international tourists because of the holiday season. Some of the tourists have no swimming experience, officials said.
The measures include continuous patrols along the beaches
and guided swimming.
Police say there has been a surge of drowning incidents in the area in the past days hence the need for caution at large.
Elsewhere in Kongowea, Nyali, Mombasa County, a body was found floating at the ocean after a suspected drowning.
The man had drowned near the Bahari Beach Club, police said. The victim did not have identification documents.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending an identification and autopsy.
