The Kenya Urban Roads Authority
(KURA) has issued a public notice announcing a three-week traffic disruption
along Ngong Road near the Junction Mall area.
The disruption is scheduled to run
from Tuesday, November 18, 2025, to Wednesday, December 10, 2025.
According to KURA, the interruption
is necessary to facilitate the erection of a steel structure for the ongoing
construction of a flyover in the area.
The works will be carried out daily
between 8pm and 5am, except on Sundays when no construction will take place.
“The disruption is to allow for
erection of the steel structure for the flyover currently under construction.
The works will be carried out between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM daily except on
Sunday,” KURA said in the notice.
During this period, traffic will be
diverted between Nairobi City County Training School and Kenya Science Campus
to allow two-way movement within the affected section.
The authority has urged motorists to
exercise caution when approaching the construction zone.
“Motorists are advised to exercise
caution when approaching the affected section and to observe all traffic signs
and directions issued by police officers and traffic marshals who will be on
site to ensure smooth traffic flow,” KURA added.
This announcement comes months after
KURA revealed plans in July to construct footbridges along the Ngong Road–Karen
Road corridor.
The move followed public concerns
over the absence of pedestrian infrastructure despite the road’s recent
expansion and modernization.
Residents had questioned why
footbridges were not included in the initial design, given the high number of
pedestrians who cross the road daily.
In response, KURA assured the public
that pedestrian safety was being addressed.
“Plans are currently underway to
install footbridges as part of efforts to enhance pedestrian safety along the
section,” the authority said in a statement published on X.
Ngong Road is one of Nairobi’s
busiest transport corridors and is known for heavy traffic and high pedestrian
activity.
Despite its expansion into a dual
carriageway, the lack of footbridges and limited zebra crossings has forced
many pedestrians, including schoolchildren, to cross fast-moving traffic to
access matatus, shops, schools and workplaces.
KURA has apologized for any
inconvenience caused and said the ongoing works are part of efforts to improve
urban mobility.
The closure comes a few days after KURA announced a
temporary closure of Jamuhuri Road to allow the construction of key drainage
and sewerage infrastructure linked to the ongoing Talanta Sports City Project
at the Jamuhuri Sports Grounds.
According to a public notice issued by KURA Director General
Silas Kinoti, the road, which has since re-opened would remain closed for at
least three days.
“The closure will facilitate construction of essential
drainage and sewer infrastructure as part of the Talanta Sports City Project,”
said the Authority.
“Motorists are advised to use Sanctuary Road and Kibera Drive as alternative routes.”
