The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced a temporary closure of Jamuhuri Road this weekend.

This is to allow the construction of key drainage and sewerage infrastructure linked to the ongoing Talanta Sports City Project at the Jamuhuri Sports Grounds.

According to a public notice issued by KURA Director General Silas Kinoti, the road will remain closed from 8pm on Friday, October 10, to 11 pm on Sunday, October 12, 2025.

“The closure will facilitate construction of essential drainage and sewer infrastructure as part of the Talanta Sports City Project,” said the Authority.

“Motorists are advised to use Sanctuary Road and Kibera Drive as alternative routes.”

KURA assured Nairobi residents that traffic marshals will be stationed along affected routes to ease movement during the closure and minimise inconvenience to motorists.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank the public for their cooperation as we implement these critical upgrades,” the Authority said.

Motorists are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly and follow signage during the temporary closure period.

For more information, the public may contact the KURA Corporate Communications Department or visit [www.kura.go.ke](http://www.kura.go.ke).

KURA had earlier said the drainage and sewerage components are critical for the area’s long-term sustainability, given the frequent flooding around Ngong Road and Jamuhuri, which has in the past disrupted activities and damaged infrastructure.

The authority noted that the new system will integrate with the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company’s (NCWSC) network, improving stormwater management and waste discharge efficiency in the wider Ngong Road–Dagoretti–Kibera corridor.

The works form part of a broader government initiative to modernise Nairobi’s sports, road, and utility infrastructure under the Talanta Hela programme spearheaded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports.

The Talanta Hela initiative, launched in 2023, aims to create a pipeline for identifying, nurturing, and monetising sports and creative talent in Kenya.

The Talanta Sports City, situated near the Nairobi Showground, is envisioned as a modern sporting and entertainment complex that will host football, athletics, and creative industry events.

The Talanta Sports City is part of that vision, combining sports infrastructure, training facilities, and digital talent management platforms to provide income opportunities for youth.

Talanta Stadium is being constructed by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) with oversight from the Kenya Defence Forces to ensure standards and timelines are met.

It will have a seating capacity of 60,000 spectators.

The facility is planned for exclusive use for football and rugby, unlike many stadiums that include an athletics track.

However, adjacent fields for athletics and a secondary pitch will be part of the complex.

Key features will include VIP hospitality areas, medical rooms, doping control rooms, media and broadcast areas, plus advanced lighting for night matches.

Project completion is targeted for December 2025.

Sustainability features include solar panels, rainwater harvesting and energy-efficient LED lighting.
