Crime scene

A 25-year-old man was killed in an argument over a piece of land in the Rongo area, Migori County.

Police said the incident happened in Kamwango village and involved one Michael Magare.

His body was found lying in a pool of blood in his mother’s kitchen after he had been killed on September 25, 2025.

The assailant was said to be his cousin, who used a sharp object to inflict cuts in the neck and left knee, police said.

Police said they had established that the deceased had a land dispute with his cousin and an uncle that led to the fatal attack.

The assailant trailed him to the house and hacked him to death before escaping to an unknown destination, police said.

The incident happened as the deceased’s mother watched helplessly. She screamed for help as the man attacked and killed her only son in rage.

The assailant later escaped the scene, police said.

An angry mob descended on their matrimonial house and set it on fire.

The deceased man was the only son in the family.

The body was later taken to the mortuary for postmortem and other investigations. The killer weapon was yet to be recovered, police who visited the scene said.

The villagers patrolled the area overnight in search of the said assailant in vain, police said.

Police teams visited the village on Friday as part of efforts to pursue the suspect and calm the locals who planned retaliations on the family members.

Such cases involving land matters have been on the rise amid calls to solve them amicably.

Most of the cases are pending in courts, police said.

Detectives say they record up to eight murder cases daily in the country.

This has forced the formation of a homicide unit to focus on the trend in general amid claims the cases are overwhelming.
