A disturbing video has emerged capturing the final moments of 55-year-old domestic worker Zaituni Kavaya before she fatally fell from the 3rd floor of an apartment building in Kilimani, Nairobi.
The footage, now circulating online, shows a man in a white T-shirt holding onto a woman in a blue dress with red and black spots, identified as Kavaya, as she hangs precariously from a balcony. Seconds later, he lets go of her hands.
Kavaya is then seen clinging desperately to the railing of a lower balcony, struggling to balance herself.
She appears to converse with unseen individuals before attempting to descend to the third floor.
With the windows shut and no support available, she eventually loses grip and falls to her death.
A postmortem later confirmed she died from multiple organ injuries caused by blunt force trauma consistent with a high fall.
The incident has sparked outrage in Kibera, where Kavaya lived, with family members, neighbours, and colleagues staging protests demanding justice. Police officers addressing the demonstrators assured them that the case would not be ignored.
“Zaituni atapata haki yake. Yule mtu atapatikana na hatia atachukuliwa hatua kulingana na sheria,” one officer said, promising justice.
Five suspects from a Sudanese family have since been arrested and are being held at Kilimani Police Station.
They had reportedly hired Kavaya for laundry work at their Mpunga Road residence before accusing her of stealing Sh5,000 from a pair of trousers.
Court documents indicate the household’s son called Kavaya back after she had left, accusing her of theft.
Their lawyer told the court that she fell while attempting to escape being reported to the police.
But Kavaya’s family rejects the account, insisting she was killed.
“She had already left work but was called back, only to end up dead. When I collected her belongings at the DCI office, I only found KSh160 in her purse, slippers, a dress, and a rubber. There was nothing else,” her daughter Faith said.
The suspects remain in custody as police continue investigations.
The case returns to court on October 1, with Kavaya’s family insisting they will not relent until those responsible are held accountable.
