Felix Asoha, a writer and a journalist with Radio Africa Group pens this week’s heartfelt Letter to My Younger Self

Dear Younger Self,

If only I could hold your hand and walk with you down those dusty playgrounds, watching you chase that ball made of manila paper.

You guarded the goal with pride, sometimes sprinted as number 7, and ran like the wind itself.

If I could turn back time, I’d tell you to keep those moments close capture them in photos, write them in journals, treasure them, because they are the purest pieces of your joy.

I know how quick you were to fight back when someone wronged you. You waited after school, fists clenched, determined to prove yourself.

But the day a girl struck you harder than you expected, you discovered that strength isn’t always in fighting—it’s in walking away, in choosing peace.

If I could whisper in your ear then, I’d tell you: peace will always carry you further than anger.

You worked hard, even in primary school, because you knew life wouldn’t be easy.

And yet, I’d still urge you to push harder, to believe even more, to know that your efforts would carry you farther than you imagined.

High school was a season of laughter and growth. Remember being a prefect, writing names of noise makers, performing drama on Fridays, debating with fire in your voice?

You lit up those rooms with courage and humor. If only you had written it all down, kept the photos, saved the laughter somewhere safe.

Those were treasures you didn’t know you were losing.

College tested your spirit. The weight of school fees, the sleepless nights, the constant worry it nearly broke you. But you endured. You pushed through.

That resilience, that determination, is what has carried you to today.

And love… oh, love hurt you. You gave yourself to someone who didn’t return the same warmth. Expectations betrayed you, left your heart bruised.

If I could guide you then, I’d remind you: love, but do not lose yourself.

Give, but do not expect. Protect your heart, because not everyone will hold it gently.

Looking back, one truth shines above all: hard work defines you. Discipline, courage, and perseverance will shape your journey. So, live boldly.

Hold on to joy. Guard your peace. Run your race at your own pace.

And above all—cherish every moment, because time will pass quicker than you know.

Everyone has a story worth sharing. If you’ve ever wished you could talk to your younger self—with wisdom, forgiveness, or clarity—we invite you to write to us.
