                                                                                             Letter to Younger Self

Every scar has a story. “Letter to My Younger Self” invites you into the reflective hearts of people who've walked winding roads—offering gentle truths, bold lessons, and encouragement for anyone still figuring it out. These weekly letters are full of grace and grit, showing how setbacks shape wisdom and how the past still holds power to teach. From nurturing curiosity to embracing mentorship, each piece is a tribute to growth through lived experience.

Winnie Kamau, President Association of Freelance Journalists, pens this week’s heartfelt Letter to My Younger Self.

Dear Younger Self,

Hey, how have you been? It has been a minute since we last spoke. I can see you are full of energy, dreams, and questions about the future. You might be questioning every decision that you are making and second guessing yourself about the risks and ventures you want to get into.

You wonder if there will be any rewards to all your hard work. You wonder if your voice is strong enough to make a difference. I need you to know you are destined for greatness and thriving is who you are.

My career in data journalism and editing is a path of storytelling, truth-seeking, and advocacy. If you ever choose this path I must say it won’t always be easy, but it will be deeply fulfilling. Along the way, you will build bridges between communities, shine light in dark places, and open doors for others to be heard. You will grow into a leader who doesn’t just chase success, but creates impact.

Always be proud of your achievements, they will come from resilience, consistency, and the belief that your work matters. You’ll learn that your words can inspire, influence, and even transform societies. Hold on to that fire.

But I must also warn you of the pitfalls you’ll encounter along the way.

Do not hesitate to cultivate unwavering Self-Belief. Don't let the noise of doubt overshadow your inner voice. Many will question your path, and the temptation to withdraw may be strong. But remember, your voice holds immense power; wield it with conviction. Prioritise Your Well-being.

The demands of your work can be consuming. Recognise that rest is not a sign of weakness, but a vital component that fuels your purpose and sustains your energy. Remain Grounded in Humility. Always know that family is everything.

While recognition may come, ensure it doesn't detach you from your core values. True fulfilment comes from maintaining integrity and positively impacting the lives around you. Always exercise discernment in your endeavours

Not every battle is yours to fight. Direct your energy strategically towards causes where your efforts can create meaningful change.

Everyone has a story worth sharing. If you’ve ever wished you could talk to your younger self—with wisdom, forgiveness, or clarity—we invite you to write to us. Your real, heartfelt letter might just be the encouragement someone else needs today. You may remain anonymous if preferred, but your truth matters. We don’t pay contributors, but we believe in the power of shared experience. Join us in building a collection of life’s hard-earned lessons and gentle reminders.
