Body of university student recovered in Nyamira shallow grave

Police and forensic teams have exhumed the body of a university student from a suspicious shallow grave in Maosi Village in Nyamira County following a court order granted on Wednesday.

This follows an initial discovery of the suspicious grave on Tuesday, at 7:40 am

Police said the exhumation exercise of 20-year-old Faith Kemunto took place on Thursday afternoon, beginning at 3 pm and concluding at 4pm, at a murram site.

The prime suspect, believed to be her boyfriend,  has since been arrested.

The operation was led by the Homicide Team from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters, alongside forensic and crime scene investigation officers.

Also present during the exhumation were a government pathologist, Dr Richard Njoroge, police officers from Nyamira South and Nyamira North, public health officers from Nyamira, a mortician from Nyamira Referral Hospital Mortuary, and local administration officials. 

The remains were carefully exhumed, processed and documented by CSI officers from DCI Headquarters and Nyamira.

The body was transported to Nyamira County Referral Hospital morgue for preservation, pending postmortem examination.

The case is currently under investigation by DCI Nyamira North.

Elsewhere, authorities are investigating a suspected infanticide case after a fetus was reportedly thrown into a pit latrine in Sergoit Area, Keiyo North Sub-County.

The incident was reported at 3:40pm, on Wednesday by the Assistant Chief of Sergoit Area.

He received information from a father that his daughter, 25, from Keiyo, is suspected of having disposed of a fetus into a pit latrine on Monday.

The lady remains at large, police said.

Police officers from Iten Police Station and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Keiyo North, visited the scene. 

They retrieved the body of a female baby with no physical injuries.

The crime scene was documented by scenes of crime officers, and the body was moved to Iten County Referral Hospital morgue for preservation pending further investigations.

The case is currently under investigation by DCI Keiyo North.
