Man kills his wife, dies by suicide in Kitui

A man stabbed and killed his wife before he died by suicide in the Kabati area, Kitui County.

The incident happened in Kauwi village on Thursday, police said.

The body of Winfred Mutua, 28, was found lying in a pool of blood outside a house with multiple stab wounds in the stomach, right eye, left buttock and hands.

She had been tortured as she was being killed, police said.

The woman was a waitress at a hotel in the township.

She is said to have separated from the assailant, who was her husband, identified as Kimanzi Munyao.

The man was seen entering the hotel where the woman worked late at dawn on Thursday, August 28, 2025, before the bodies were found.

She was later found murdered.

The man later hanged himself using a rope on a tree about 400 meters from where the body of the woman lay, witnesses said.

Police said the couple had two children.

The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and further investigations.

Police said they had not established the motive for the murder and suicide.

Murder and suicide cases are on the rise amid efforts to contain the trend, police say.

In Wanguru, Kirinyaga County, one Gregory Kinyua, 53, was found dead after a suicide incident.

He had hanged himself in his house using a sisal rope that was found tied around his neck, police said as they moved the body to the mortuary pending other procedures.

Suicide menace is growing in villages amid calls to address it.

Elsewhere in Thika, Kiambu County, the body of a man was found lying in a thicket in the Whiteline area.

Police said the body had multiple injuries in the chest, head, legs and back.

It is suspected that the man was killed elsewhere before the body was ferried and dumped at the scene.

The man did not have identification documents then.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and investigations.

The motive of the murder is yet to be known, police said.
