Preparations for the 89th National Youth Service (NYS) passing-out parade are complete, with the ceremony set to be held Thursday, August 28 at the NYS Paramilitary Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County.

President William Ruto will preside over the event, which marks the culmination of months of rigorous training for the recruits.

The much-anticipated ceremony had initially been scheduled for Wednesday, August 27, but was moved by a day to allow for final preparations.

Last week, the Service Commandant, General James Tembur, supervised a dress rehearsal at the academy, where recruits showcased their readiness for the big day.

During the event, Tembur expressed admiration for the discipline and preparedness demonstrated by the recruits, noting that the level of precision on display reflected NYS’s commitment to excellence.

“The high standards exhibited here today reaffirm the Service’s central role in nurturing disciplined, patriotic, and skilled young citizens,” he remarked after the rehearsal.

This year’s parade marks yet another significant milestone for the institution as it continues its transformation journey towards becoming a regional centre of excellence in training and youth empowerment.

The recruits are graduating after a six-month intensive training, having joined the academy in February this year.

Those recruited were aged 18 to 24 years.

Over the years, NYS has expanded its mandate beyond paramilitary training to include technical, vocational, and entrepreneurial skills development, positioning young people to contribute meaningfully to national development.

The passing-out parade is a long-standing tradition where recruits formally complete their rigorous training and officially join the nation-building and the ranks of NYS.

The colourful event typically features precision drills, parades, and demonstrations that reflect months of intensive preparation.

Ruto’s attendance underscores the government’s recognition of NYS as a key pillar in youth development, employment creation, and national service.

The Head of State is expected to address the recruits, outlining the government’s agenda for youth empowerment and the future role of NYS in national transformation.

For the recruits, the day will be a proud culmination of months of hard work, discipline, and resilience, as they officially graduate into the service of the nation.
