Newly appointed Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) acting Chief Executive Officer, Dr Richard Lesiyampe, has expressed excitement and gratitude following his return to the country’s largest public referral and teaching hospital.

Lesiyampe, who previously served at KNH in his career, took to social media to share his joy, describing the appointment as a meaningful homecoming.

“Back to my former institution, this time more experienced, more exposed, and more energised,” he wrote.

“Thank you CS Adan Duale, the Ministry of Health, and the Government of Kenya, for your trust and belief in me. I am grateful. Kenyatta National Hospital, I am coming back.”

Duale praised Lesiyampe as a seasoned healthcare administrator, well-positioned to steer the hospital through ongoing reforms.

“Dr Richard Lesiyampe brings vast experience to strengthen KNH’s governance, clinical, and administrative systems,” Duale said.

“As the apex national referral facility, Kenyatta National Hospital plays a critical role in advancing health sector reforms and achieving Universal Health Coverage.”

Before this appointment, Lesiyampe served as acting CEO at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), where he was credited with boosting the hospital’s visibility and operational effectiveness.

As part of the leadership reshuffle, Joshua Clinton Ombiri Okise has been appointed as Acting CEO of JOOTRH.

Duale said Okise would be tasked with overseeing a smooth transition and supporting the hospital’s growth following its recent elevation to Level 6 status.

KNH, established in 1901 and located in Nairobi, remains Kenya’s premier referral and teaching hospital. It plays a pivotal role in medical education, research, and delivery of specialized healthcare services in East and Central Africa.

KNH also serves as a key hub for medical training and research, supporting Kenya’s broader goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage under the government’s health transformation agenda.

Lesiyampe’s appointment is expected to strengthen operational efficiency, improve clinical services, and better align the institution with national health priorities.
