The Senate has officially gazetted a Special Sitting scheduled for August 20, 2025, to deliberate on the impeachment charges brought against Kericho Governor Eric K. Mutai.

In a gazette notice dated August 18, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced that the sitting will be held in the Senate Chamber at Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, starting at 2:30 p.m.

The announcement follows a formal communication from Kericho County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai, which was received by Kingi’s office on Monday.

The communication detailed the Assembly’s August 15 resolution to impeach Mutai, citing several serious allegations including misappropriation of public and donor funds, abuse of office, and authorising illegal payments to contractors.

"On Friday, August 15, 2025, the County Assembly of Kericho, vide its resolution and pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution of Kenya, Section 33 of the County Governments Act, and Standing Orders 70 and 70A, approved the motion to remove H.E. Dr. Erick K. Mutai from office by way of impeachment,” the letter read.

All 33 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted in favor of the motion, following a tense day-long session in which Governor Mutai mounted a spirited defense. This marks the second attempt to oust him from office.

The impeachment motion was initiated by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony, who accused the governor of presiding over the illegal disbursement of Sh85 million to contractors for incomplete or non-existent projects.

Mutai has strongly denied the allegations, dismissing them as politically motivated.

In addition to the impeachment proceedings, the Special Sitting will also witness the swearing-in of Consolata Nabwire Wakwabubi as the new Senator, marking a significant moment during the session.

As per procedure, the Senate will either uphold or overturn the County Assembly’s decision based on the evidence presented. If upheld, Mutai will be officially removed from office.

The Senate's verdict is expected to have significant implications, not just for Kericho County politics, but also for the broader national landscape as it reflects the growing assertiveness of County Assemblies in holding governors accountable.
