Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has called on parents,
especially mothers, to continue playing an active role in shaping the character
of young people.
Speaking on Thursday when he hosted 3,500 women opinion leaders from Tharaka Nithi County at his Irunduni home, Kindiki praised the sacrifices women make in raising children into responsible members of society.
“We respect our women for the sacrifices they make to nurture children from the day they are born to respected members of society. Mothers are the principals in the school of life,” he said.
He urged mothers to keep mentoring the youth so they do not fall into harmful behaviours.
According to Kindiki, the government cannot solve all the challenges facing young people without the support of parents.
“There was a way we were taught to behave as children in school, at home and among elders. We should not lose our culture. I beseech you to continue instilling respect and good behaviour in our children,” he added.
The Deputy President noted that despite being highly educated, he still values his own parents’ advice because they are more experienced with handling life.
“My parents are almost 90 years old, but I still listen to their wise counsel because they know more than I do. Please keep this role as a parent because the young people will learn from you more than anyone else.”
Kindiki also expressed concern over a growing trend where political rivals use young people to engage in violence and vandalism.
He condemned the practice, stressing that political competition should be based on ideas, not destruction.
“This is not acceptable. We should tell the young people that we can compete ideologically without resorting to violence. You may not agree with me, but do it without burning down businesses that have given jobs to young people,” he said.
Highlighting his role in government, Kindiki said he works tirelessly to assist President William Ruto in serving all Kenyans.
“I will work hard, and I will not embarrass you. That is why you see me in every part of Kenya assisting the President,” he noted.
He assured residents that while he serves the whole country, he will not neglect his home county of Tharaka Nithi.
“I’m a servant of all Kenyans, not only my region. But as I serve Kenyans, I will not forget Tharaka Nithi because it is part of Kenya.”
