Asiyo, who passed away on July 16, 2025, in North
Carolina, USA, at the age of 90, was remembered as a distinguished stateswoman,
a trailblazer and a maternal figure.
She served two terms as an MP for Karachuonyo
constituency before settling into advocacy and women’s rights movements.
Born on September 12, 1932, Phoebe Asiyo was among the
first women from Nyanza to be elected to Parliament, following the pioneering
footsteps of Grace Onyango, who became Kenya’s first female MP in 1969.
On Wednesday, leaders from across the country gathered
at Maxwell SDA Central Church in Nairobi to celebrate Asiyo, in a ceremony leading
up to today’s final rest.
Kindiki to grace empowerment forums
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki will grace economic
empowerment forums in Marsabit and Nyeri counties.
The DP has been traversing the country attending the forums.
They are intended to support and define the
government’s strategic interventions aimed at boosting the country’s economic
growth.
They also emphasise the government’s initiatives, including
National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) and Kenya Jobs and
Economic Transformation (KJET.
