Stephen Munyakho, a Kenyan national previously on death row in Saudi Arabia, has arrived in Nairobi following his release.
He touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International
Airport (JKIA) at 12:50 a.m., where he was received by a group of emotional
relatives, friends, and government officials.
There were visible scenes of relief and joy as
family members embraced him. Some shed tears, while others sang in celebration
of his safe return.
Munyakho was officially welcomed by Foreign
Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei, alongside his parents and members
of the special committee that coordinated efforts to secure his release.
His return comes after months of diplomatic
engagement, fundraising efforts, and support from Kenyans locally and in the
diaspora.
Munyakho had been sentenced to death in 2023,
but the sentence was lifted after the family of the deceased accepted diya, commonly known as blood money.
The agreed payment amounted to approximately Sh129
million.
