National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on Kenyans living abroad to ignore divisive political rhetoric and continue supporting the country’s economic development through diaspora remittances.
Speaking on Saturday during a Women Empowerment Forum held at Nyamache grounds in Kisii County, Wetang’ula underscored the importance of diaspora foreign exchange in stabilising the Kenyan economy.
“Kenya is home, and the money received from abroad in dollars helps stabilise the economy through foreign exchange,” Wetang’ula said.
He criticised leaders urging the diaspora not to invest in Kenya, terming them as “visionless” and misleading. He further lauded Kisii residents for utilising funds from abroad to support farming and business ventures.
“Some of these businesses thrive because of the startup capital sent by our children living in different countries. The Gusii region is richly blessed with fertile land and consistent rainfall, making it ideal for crops like bananas, avocados, and sugarcane,” he said.
The Speaker assured residents that tea bonuses will be reviewed to ensure equitable earnings across regions, stating that “what goes to the market mirrors what Kenya produces.”
Wetang’ula also praised Kisii leaders for ensuring the Abagusii community has a presence in critical economic sectors, including agriculture, transport, and housing.
“Together, we must join hands to build our great nation, Kenya,” he said.
The Speaker was accompanied by national and local leaders supporting grassroots empowerment and development initiatives.
Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Donya said structured empowerment of groups is key to realising the Kenya Kwanza Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
“The idea is unstoppable. We’re not giving you money to share out; use it to collectively empower yourselves,” she said.
National Assembly Chief Whip Sylvanus Osoro praised the current administration’s direction and called for continued support.
“I will continue to speak my mind. We stand to gain as a community when we support other political formations,” Osoro stated.
Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot urged the Gusii community to join national development efforts and avoid political manipulation.
“There are those who ride waves every election season. No single community can win an election alone—we must build strategic partnerships,” Cheruiyot said.
Migori Senator Eddy Oketch called out tribal politics, urging leaders to promote unity. “We must reject those who seek to divide the country along tribal lines,” he said.
Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi emphasised the need for politics driven by ideas and performance. “The Kenya Kwanza leadership is delivering on its promises. President Ruto is determined to meet his agenda.”
