Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has congratulated Kenyan U-20 midfielder Aldrine Kibet following his landmark move to Spanish La Liga side Celta Vigo, describing it as a “phenomenal” achievement and a proud moment for Kenya.
In a video call with Kibet, who is currently in Spain with his parents, Ababu was effusive in his praise, saying, “I feel like hugging you. I’m so proud of you.”
Kibet, visibly emotional, admitted the moment still felt surreal. “It’s unreal, it’s yet to register,” he said.
Ababu recounted Kibet’s rapid rise from starring at St Anthony Boys in Kitale and representing Kenya at the CECAFA U-17 tournament, to sealing a high-profile move to Europe.
“I have been cheering Aldrine all the way. It’s a big step for Aldrine and for all of us. It’s phenomenal,” he said.
Kibet’s father, also on the call, told Ababu, “We really miss you in sports,” to which Ababu responded by reaffirming his commitment to nurturing young talents in whichever assignment.
Ababu is currently Kenya's Permanent Representative to United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
“Aldrine is now Kenya’s ambassador. Your story is inspiring so many young Kenyans. You have the whole country cheering you on,” Ababu said.
“Your success shows every Kenyan youth that it’s possible.”
Ababu pledged personal support, vowing to attend Kibet’s first match.
“First game you play, I will be in the stadium. I’m now a Celta Vigo fan,” he declared.
The former CS urged Kibet to remain humble and focused.
“Continue being grounded, respectful, and hardworking. Talent will take you far, but only character will keep you there,” he advised.
Ababu expressed confidence that Kibet would become a key figure for the Harambee Stars soon.
“I can’t wait to see you put on the senior jersey of Harambee Stars. In 2023, I told you I see you as a brand at AFCON 2027. We won’t just host AFCON — we’ll compete to win it, and you’re among the players to take us there,” he said.
He also promised to visit Kibet in Spain soon.
“I’m coming to Spain in the next couple of weeks. I’ll try to get in touch with you,” he said.
Reflecting on Kenya’s sporting potential, Ababu added, “Many people think Kenya is only about athletics, but we have unlimited football talent. Continue inspiring the youngsters back at the academy.”
In his closing message, Ababu reminded Kibet to remain anchored in faith and family.
“Keep God close in your life, and those two God’s angels, mum and dad,” he said.
Kibet thanked Ababu for the mentorship that helped shape his career.
“I just want to say thank you. You set a very good platform for me to be here. You were Godsent,” said the midfielder.
On July 16, Celta Vigo announced the signing of Kibet on a four-year deal.
The transfer, reportedly valued at €6 million (Sh900 million), will see Kibet initially join Celta Fortuna, the club’s reserve side, as part of a structured pathway towards the senior team. He joins from Nastic Soccer Academy in Tarragona.
