Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has cautioned Kenyans against falling into the trap of tribal divisions.
Kindiki warned that such sentiments are detrimental to the country’s unity and progress.
“Do not be misled into entertaining tribal divisions because it is harmful to our efforts to unite the nation,” he said.
Speaking during a women's empowerment forum in Taita Taveta County, the DP urged Kenyans to live in peace and unity for our nation’s prosperity.
He stressed the importance of expressing dissent within constitutional limits, noting that while all Kenyans are free to air their views and disagree with the government, it must be done peacefully and without arms.
“If you have a different opinion, you are permitted by the Constitution to express it, but you cannot endanger national stability and security in the pretence of exercising your views,” he stated.
“Anyone who does the contrary is an enemy of Kenya and wants to bring this nation down.”
The Deputy President emphasised that peace and security are the foundation of development, asserting that the government will defend the nation’s stability “by every means possible,” even at the cost of political popularity.
On development, Kindiki announced that construction has begun on the Sh9.4 billion Taveta–Njukini–Chala–Rombo–Ilasit road, a 70km project linking Taita Taveta and Kajiado counties.
He assured residents that the project would be completed on time, noting that funds were already available.
He also revealed plans to open a Lands Registry office in Taveta, saying that preliminary procedures had been completed and gazettment was pending.
This, he said, will make land transactions more accessible for residents.
Additionally, he announced that the government is considering waiving Agriculture Finance Corporation (AFC) loans following requests by locals.
A report from the AFC Board, chaired by former Taita Taveta Governor John Mruttu, he said, is expected this week to determine the next steps.
In line with the government’s Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), Kindiki announced the construction of 1,000 housing units in Taveta worth Sh2.2 billion, and an additional 580 units worth Sh400 million for the Taveta KMTC campus.
He said markets are also being constructed in Mwatate, Voi, and Wundanyi towns to benefit small-scale traders and mama mboga, in line with the bottom-up economic transformation agenda.
To enhance rural electrification, he said the government has allocated Sh767 million to the county for last-mile electricity connectivity, with Sh341 million specifically earmarked for Taveta constituency to connect 3,700 new households.
“We will consider additional allocations under this rural electricity expansion program to ensure no household is left behind,” Kindiki stated.
Present during the event were National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Cabinet Secretaries Ali Hassan Joho (Mining and Blue Economy) and Salim Mvurya (Sports and Youth Affairs), President’s Aide Farouk Kibet, Governor Andrew Mwadime, and over 30 MPs, including Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Majority Whip Silvanus Osoro.
Kibet urged Kenyans to shun leaders preaching divisive politics.
