Several stalls were reduced to ashes after a fire broke out early Monday morning at the Garissa market, also known as Suq Mukti.

The blaze, which started around 6:00 am, destroyed sections of the busy market located along Posta Road. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Residents and business owners said they were woken by thick smoke and crackling flames as the fire spread quickly across the market.

The market is home to dozens of vendors dealing in various goods, including fresh produce, groceries, clothing, electronics and household items. Among the worst affected were traders selling fruits and vegetables.

Firefighters and locals joined efforts to contain the blaze, but several structures had already been consumed by the time help arrived.

No injuries or fatalities had been reported by the time of publishing. Authorities have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage.
