A fire broke out on Tuesday evening at a godown located at the SAPPHIRE Business Park along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Machakos County.

Eyewitnesses said the blaze started just before 6:00pm, sending thick smoke into the sky and drawing attention from residents in nearby Mlolongo town.

The fire, which affected warehouses on the outskirts of Mlolongo in Athi River subcounty, prompted an emergency response from the Machakos County fire brigade.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and began efforts to contain the flames.

By press time, large plumes of smoke were still billowing from the burning structures as members of the public watched from a distance across a perimeter fence.

Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the fire or report any injuries. Efforts to bring the situation under control are ongoing.
