A section of Kipipiri residents have taken their cries to the streets as they demand justice for a man who died in a police station.

Initial police report indicates that the man identified as Ruigi Ndubi died by suicide while in police custody at Turasha police station.

While protesting, residents demanded the immediate arrest of the police officer who put the deceased in custody.

“We are demanding justice for the death of this man; his family must get answers on how he died,” a protester said.

“The police involved in arresting him should also be apprehended,” she added.

The residents have also denied the claims that he might have hanged himself.

"They are killing us like animals," a protester chanted.

Ndubi had been arrested for the offence of obstructing police officers while in performance of duty and placed in custody.

Police claimed he appeared drunk when he was arrested.

The officer on duty visited the cell at 12.46 pm and found the suspect had died by suicide inside the cell by hanging himself using his shirt that was tied to the padlock of the inner door.

The scene was documented, and IPOA was alerted for a formal probe. Police and officials from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority are investigating the death

An autopsy is planned on the body to determine how the man died.

This is the latest such incident to happen in a police cell amid calls on authorities to always take care of suspects in their custody.
