A 28-year-old man was killed in a brutal mob justice incident in Seme Subcounty, Kisumu, after he allegedly went on a violent rampage, injuring a villager and damaging several homes and property.

Maurice Otieno Okeyo was attacked and killed within his uncle’s compound.

According to a police report, the incident occurred at around 9:30 am on Sunday.

“DCIO Seme and Bodi Police visited the scene and found the body lying dead in the compound with multiple injuries on the head and other parts of the body,” police said.

They said close to the body were sticks and stones, believed to have been the weapons used by the enraged mob.

Okeyo is suspected to have committed a violent assault and destroyed property in the neighbourhood while armed with several dangerous weapons, including a rungu, panga, slasher and hoe.

Police said the man started his rampage the previous evening, with a report showing that he allegedly attacked and injured one Johnston Otieno, a 59-year-old male adult, by cutting him on the forehead.

The officers stated that the following morning, around 9am, Okeyo reportedly continued his violent streak.

“Armed with blunt and sharp weapons, he went from house to house damaging property and threatening residents,” police said.

During the said rampage, Okeyo damaged windows at multiple homes and shattered the windows of a villager’s car.

According to the police, the widespread destruction and threatening behaviour angered the residents, who then turned on Okeyo, attacking him fatally.

The scene was processed by investigators, and the body was taken to Kombewa County Hospital Mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Cases of mob lynching have been on the rise in the country.

On June 11, two unidentified men were killed in a mob justice incident in Huruma, Nairobi.

Police say the two male adults, aged between 20 and 30 years, were allegedly attempting to steal a motorcycle from a rider identified as William Mudavadi.

“The victim raised alarm where irate members of the public cornered one and subjected him to mob injustice,” the police report stated.

The second suspect, who tried to escape, was also caught by the mob.

“His accomplice who had attempted to escape, was also intercepted by the mob and suffered the same fate,” it added.

The bodies of the two were set on fire and burned beyond recognition.
