Former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Sam Nyamweya has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Mama Mildred Wanyama, a respected figure in Kenyan sports and the beloved wife of former Kenya international footballer and celebrated coach Noah Wanyama.
In his message, Nyamweya expressed deep sorrow at the passing of Mama Mildred, whom he described not only as a cherished mother and wife but also as an accomplished netball player.
He added that she was also a visionary entrepreneur and the pillar of one of Kenya’s most iconic sporting families.
“Mama Mildred Wanyama’s legacy transcends generations. She was the mother of several prominent figures, most notably Football Kenya Federation vice president Macdonald Mariga and former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama, both of whom have flown Kenya’s flag high on the international stage," he said.
“Her unwavering support and guidance helped shape the lives and careers of her children, leaving a lasting mark on the landscape of Kenyan football,” he said.
Nyamweya, who has been involved in football management for over three decades, noted that he has known the Wanyama family throughout his career.
He commended Mama Mildred’s quiet but powerful role in nurturing a family that has contributed immensely to the development and global recognition of Kenyan sports.
“Mama Mildred was not only a former netball star herself, but also a strong and visionary woman who built a family legacy that continues to bring pride to Kenya. Her contribution to our sporting history—through her athletic achievements and the success of her family—will never be forgotten.”
Nyamweya said that the deceased’s legacy of dedication, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence will continue to inspire generations to come.
Mama Mildred is said to have passed away peacefully on Saturday morning.
Mariga confirmed the news in a post on his X page.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, who left us peacefully today morning," he wrote.
Mariga added that the family will be meeting to organise her burial.
"We are currently making arrangements and will share more details soon," he stated.
