Police shot and killed a suspected thief in a confrontation in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area, Nairobi.
Police
said the incident happened on Thursday evening along Third Avenue outside a
mosque where two suspects on a motorcycle had snatched a mobile phone from a
pedestrian.
This is
after they threatened to stab the victim.
Police
who were on patrol in the area confronted the two as they tried to escape and
fatally shot one.
An
accomplice who was riding a getaway motorcycle abandoned it and escaped on
foot, police said.
The
stolen mobile phone was recovered and handed back to the owner. Also recovered
was a knife and the motorcycle that was being used in the mission.
Police
said they had deployed more personnel to man the area over the anticipated Eid
celebrations.
Locals
had also complained that suspects on motorcycles attack and rob them of their
valuables.
The body
was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other procedures.
Nairobi
police commander George Sedah said they have enhanced operations in the city to
address some cases of robbery.
Sedah
said more undercover cops are on patrols in parts of the city to address the
menace.
This has
seen a number of suspects arrested and arraigned.
Meanwhile,
police are hunting for a suspect who stoned and seriously injured a police
officer in Kilifi.
The suspect escaped
after hitting a police officer using a stone during a failed arrest in Msongoleni
village, Malindi, Kilifi County.
Police said three
police officers from Kizingo police station had gone to the village to arrest a
suspect for allegedly threatening to kill when he turned violent.
He picked up a stone
and hit one of the officers, seriously injuring him in the head.
Police said the
officer sustained a serious injury on his left side of his head.
The suspect managed
to escape the scene in the Wednesday afternoon drama.
The injured officer
was rushed to a hospital in Malindi, where he was treated and discharged.
The hunt for the suspect is ongoing, police said.
