Two suspects linked to the murder of the Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Ong'ondo Were, will be detained at Kamiti Maximum Prison as they undergo mental assessment.

The assessment will be conducted at Mathari Hospital, following orders issued by the High Court.

The two, Allan Omondi Ogolla and Isaac Kuria, appeared virtually before the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

They joined the proceedings from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters, where they are currently in custody.

During the session, the defence counsel requested time for a mental assessment of the accused.

The advocate noted that such evaluations are often conducted at Mbagathi Hospital, but requested Mathare Hospital, citing the complexity of the case.

He further informed the court that additional suspects may be presented in connection with the matter and requested that each be handled separately to facilitate thorough investigations and hospital procedures.

Justice Margaret Waringa Muigai allowed the application.

She ordered that the two accused be taken to Mathari Hospital for mental evaluation.

The court also directed that the Criminal Division facilitate legal representation for the accused through the Pro Bono Committee.

Justice Muigai further granted the prosecution 14 days to complete the mental assessments.

The case will be mentioned on June 18, 2025, in courtroom 1 for further directions.

Were was shot dead on April 30, 2025, by a lone gunman near City Mortuary along Ngong Road.

The assailant, who was riding a motorcycle, fled the scene immediately after the attack.

Were was laid to rest at his Kachien rural home on Friday, May 9, 2025.
