Police in Meru have arrested two suspects linked to a violent robbery and recovered an AK-47 rifle following a swift security operation on Wednesday evening.

According to authorities, the incident unfolded at around 8:30 pm, when a National Police Reserve officer reported hearing gunfire at Mungania Shopping Centre.

The reservist spotted a suspect armed with an AK-47 rifle who dropped the weapon and fled after being challenged.

Officers from Kathare, Subuiga, and Buuri East police stations responded promptly and discovered an abandoned vehicle suspected to have been used by the robbers.

Inside the car, police recovered several personal items, including two mobile phones and arrested a female suspect found at the scene.

A second suspect was later arrested while hiding in a nearby house.

Preliminary investigations indicate the duo had earlier robbed a local shop attendant, who sustained minor injuries during the incident.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court.

The recovered firearm and the vehicle have been secured for forensic analysis as investigations continue.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, the sixth suspect linked to an incident where robbers ambushed and opened fire at police officers on foot patrol, killing one and injuring two, was arrested.

The incident happened on Sunday night, June 1, 2025. The injured cops are undergoing treatment.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the man is part of a larger group that has allegedly been involved in a series of violent robberies in Nakuru.

During the arrest, police found exhibits suspected of having been recently robbed from a Pakawa resident by gunmen.

The suspect was handed over to Nakuru East detectives.

His alleged accomplices were arrested on Tuesday, after a team of detectives were deployed to hunt down the gang.

During the operation, five suspected gang members were nabbed and an AK-47 rifle was recovered.

The team, drawn from DCI's Operation Action Team and Crime Research Bureau, augmented their Nakuru counterparts and acted on intelligence leads.

After interrogating the suspects, police proceeded to the Rhoda area of Nakuru, where the AK 47 loaded with three rounds of ammunition was found concealed in dry grass near a residential house.

In one of the incidents linked to the gang, they allegedly staged a violent robbery at a shop located in the Soilo area of Nakuru, attacking the 24-year-old owner with machetes and daggers before stealing hundreds of thousands from his shop.

Police said that after the daring robbery, they dragged the already suppressed young man from the shop and shot him dead.

The operations seek to bring to an end the reign of terror and rid the streets of armed criminals.
