Five people on Saturday cheated death after a private car they were driving in got involved in a road accident along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa highway in Machakos County.
Police said the quintet sustained minor injuries and were rushed to the Machakos Level 5 hospital for medical attention immediately after the accident, which occurred in the Kyumbi area within Athi River subcounty.
The accident that happened at about 5.00 pm was reported to the Kyumbi police station.
The injured included two male adults, two female adults and a child.
The car, a Toyota Harrier, they were travelling in got involved in an accident with a trailer at the said location when the incident occurred. No death was reported at the scene of an accident.
Eyewitnesses said the car was moving from the Nairobi general direction towards the Mombasa general direction when it collided head-on with the trailer that was moving towards the opposite direction during the incident.
“The emergency response team received a total of five individuals – four adults (two males and two females) and one child who were promptly attended to at Machakos Level 5 hospital,” a source told the Star early Sunday.
The source said all the individuals sustained minor injuries that had been assessed and would be managed on an outpatient basis.
“They are expected to recover and return home shortly. The cause of the accident remains unclear, as the driver of the Harrier was in a state of shock and unable to provide details regarding the incident,” he said.
The extensively damaged car was towed to Kyumbi police station pending inspection and further investigations into the accident.
The incident led to a heavy traffic snarl-up along the highway
stretching several kilometres that lasted for hours. It was, however, cleared
after the wreckage was removed from the scene.
AA Kenya driving school has partnered with KeNHA, the Lower Eastern region and NTSA by donating educational booklets, reflective sashes and umbrellas to boost road safety sensitisation efforts.
The items have been distributed to pupils through continued efforts in championing road safety for school children.
The campaign has so far reached 37 schools and 18 420 pupils across Kitui, Machakos and Makueni counties, according to KeNHA.
