Kibos Sugar
and Allied Industries Limited has officially taken over the operations of
Chemelil Sugar Company.
This follows
the conclusion of a competitive leasing process announced Friday by Agriculture
Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe.
Jassi
Chatthe, Director of Kibos Sugar, assumed control of the ailing mill Saturday
morning.
He met with workers and farmers at the factory to discuss the roadmap for revitalizing the company, which has faced prolonged operational challenges.
The takeover
sparked scenes of jubilation among local farmers and factory workers, who
expressed optimism about a more stable future, including timely payments and
renewed productivity.
Many praised
the government’s decision to lease out struggling sugar factories, viewing the
move as a step toward reviving the region’s economy.
