At least six people were killed in an attack on a village near the Kenya-Ethiopia border in Mandera county Wednesday night.
Police said the incident happened in Malkamari Division near the Muruthow area of Banisa constituency.
Four other people were injured in the attack.
Police linked the attack to interclan fighting in the area.
This, according to police, was a retaliation to a similar attack that happened last week where three people were killed.
The attack occurred between Choroqo and Malkamari around midnight.
The victims belonged to the same extended family, all from a single household, underscoring the heartbreaking magnitude of the tragedy.
Those killed were identified as Kheira Muhumed Abdirahman, 38, Abdifatah Haji Issack Hassan, (4), Imran Haji Issack, (3), Aisha Haji Issack, (6 months), Halima Abdi Guhad, (42) and Kheira Mohamed Muhumed, (8).
The victims were buried on Thursday as per their tradition and religious belief.
Tension remained high on Thursday in the area amid security mobilisation to calm the situation.
Police said no arrest had been made but investigations were ongoing.
The injured were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Police said the victims were shot at by rifles.
Delayed communication due to poor mobile network coverage in the area hampered early reports from the scene, officials said.
Local leaders rushed to the area and took to social media to urge for calm even as they condemned the attack.
Nominated Member of Parliament Suleka Hulbaale condemned the attack.
The legislator termed the incident a senseless act of violence and called for swift investigations and justice for the affected families.
Hulbaale urged security agencies to step up operations in the region to prevent further attacks and protect innocent civilians.
She also called on community leaders to work together to promote peace and reconciliation.
Interclan fighting is common in the region and resources are usually at the center of the fighting.
