The body of a 26-year-old hotel staffer who drowned at the Gicheru Waterfalls in Kirinyaga county was Thursday retrieved.
Gichugu subcounty police commander Edward Ndirangu said the body of Fidel Otieno was retrieved Thursday evening at around 6.30pm by local divers in collaboration with police officers and the residents.
Omondi, who works at Ibiza hotel in Nairobi's Lavington area, was among six people who had travelled to the waterfalls at Kiringa River.
While on a sightseeing mission of the falls he slipped and fell into the waters while taking a selfie.
The victim was swept away by the raging waters, with his fate remaining unknown since Wednesday.
"They were eight people. Six were from Nairobi and two from Kutus in Kirinyaga," an eyewitness said.
Residents and friends gathered at the river bank until Thursday evening when the body was retrieved and taken to Kerugoya mortuary.
The body was found 50 metres from where he was said to have drowned on September 19 at about 6pm.
The body was set to be transported to Nairobi for burial.
And a 40-year-old pedestrian died after he was run over by a speeding matatu along Park Road, Nairobi.
Police and witnesses said Charles Kimani had tried to hang and hike a ride on a matatu on Wednesday night when he missed a step and fell on the road while the vehicle was in motion.
The matatu’s rear wheels ran over him crushing his chest. The driver told police he stopped a few metres later after being alerted by pedestrians and on checking he found Kimani unconscious.
They rushed him to hospital where he died while receiving treatment. The vehicle was detained pending inspection as the body was moved to the city mortuary.
Meanwhile, the body of a 70-year-old man was discovered in his house after a suspected suicide.
The family of Titus Mbori had not been picking up his calls prompting them to check on him in his Lungalunga house.
It was then that they found him lying on the floor with a rope around his neck.
The rope is suspected to have cut off from the roof truss as he struggled to save himself.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
