Azimio wins nine seats in 14 wards of Tana River

The ODM party won the gubernatorial seat and two parliamentary seats.

Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana arrives at the Handampya Primary School in Galole constituency to vote on August 9.

Tana River remained calm after the final election results were released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

Major (Rtd) Dhado Godhana of ODM retained his seat, whereas Danson Mungatana returned to power after a 10-year break on a UDA party ticket. 

However, the majority of the national assembly and county assembly seats were won by ODM candidates.

The ODM party won the gubernatorial seat and two parliamentary seats.

They include Ali Wario Guyo of Garsen who was reelected together with Said Hiribae alias Said Posta of Galole.

Bura constituency has a new MP Yakub Adow of Azimio who takes over from Wario.

The new Woman Rep Amina Dika is from Azimio and took over from Rehema Hassan who vied for the Bura Parliamentary seat and lost.

Out of the 14 wards in Tana River Azimio took nine of the seats which is the majority while Kenya Kwanza won five seats.

Azimio scooped three seats in Galole which has four wards while Bura which has four wards all went to Azimio.

Garsen which has six wards won in two wards while Kenya Kwanza got four seats.

The gubernatorial race was highly competitive with the first two differing with 349 votes. 

Godhana of ODM garnered 26,982 while former CAS and first Tana River governor Hussein Dado of UDA got 26,633 followed by Nuhu Nassir of UPIA with 24,101 votes.

The governor race attracted 13 candidates including Annania Larhayu Deye, Adam Barissa, Athman Kofa, Omar Kofa, Hassan Morowa, Michael Nkaduda, Swaleh Odha, Salim Batuyu, Ali Wario and Suleiman Buko.

In his acceptance speech, Godhana said he was happy about the victory and thanked all those who sacrificed their time to ensure peaceful polls.

He also thanked his opponents.

“I thank the entire IEBC staff for the work you have done in ensuring that there is a peaceful and credible election, for the security team for ensuring there is security throughout,” he said.

“This is a win for everyone.”

The senator race had 10 contestants which Mungatana won.

Mungatana is a renowned vocal legislator who served as Garsen MP for 10 years and also as assistant minister.

He defeated the immediate former Senator Juma Wario, Hassan Dukicha former Galole MP, Hantiro Abdlulaman, Ali Bule, Sadam Salat  Alive Japhet, Bakari Garise, Siyat Mohamed and  Soba Mohamed among others. 

He garnered 34,129 votes followed by Dukicha with  18,082, and Bule with 14,157.

Jumwa Wario garnered 7,222 votes while Siyat Mohamed got 6,337 votes, Salim Salat (4,037), Hantiro Abdulrahman (4,037), Alive Japhet (504)Soba Mohamed  (3,117), and Bakari Karisse (1,523).

Tana River Woman Representative garnered 26,683, followed by Kadija Snad with 17,723, Mumbo Abio with 11,920, and Melisa Hadida with 11,680.

Others were Nathan Ralia (2394), Halima Ware the first Woman Rep 4,646, Sadia Sango 4,953, Mwanahamis 815, Saiddia Halima 3,391, Fatuma Hamaro (390), Halako Twalib (7,079), Angelina Naemi (181) and Namezi Zitah (1,028). 

Tana River has been forgotten for the last five years and has not been a beneficiary of big projects, Mungatana said in his acceptance speech.

The senator-elect said Tana River has been left behind.

He said they aim at fighting for a space at the national assembly.

Mungatana also appealed to the people of Tana River to celebrate whoever wins the presidency and moves on smoothly.

The county has 141,096 registered voters.
